PHILLIPS RANCH PARK

10 Village Loop Road Pomona, CA 91766

Philips Ranch Park is located near the 71 and 60 freeways in a suburban setting. Approximately 5 acres, the Philips Ranch park is located directly adjacent to Decker Elementary School and a now demolished shopping center Philips Village. The shopping center has been razed and is scheduled to become a high-density housing project which would add potential additional park users. The park itself is mostly open green space with a walking trail, a backstop that could be used for baseball or softball, playground equipment, and an area of picnic tables and barbecue grills. The walking path was notable in that it was the only park in our survey area that had exercise stations along the route for additional exercise options.

Upon arrival, parking was a noticeable issue in that there is no designated parking area for the park. Space is available in short supply on Village Loop Road where approximately 6 cars would fill up the entire available parking and any additional cars would have to park in the adjacent neighborhood and walk. During assessment, a youth soccer team was holding a practice session in the open green space and parents were sitting in the grass, under trees, or in lawn chairs off to the side as there is no seating options near the open green space. The condition of the grass in the open space area was poor as most of the grass was desiccated and dead. Large patches of grass were not manicured and the field was full of gopher holes, dandelions, and other weeds. The gopher holes were a considerable safety issue for the youth soccer players as the size of the holes were large enough to potentially cause a severe sprain or broken ankle. The rest of the park was in average to above average condition [Table 2].
